Elyria boards eye about 9.2 mill levy for schools
Elyria voters will learn in February the levy size for May, with the school board leaning toward about 9.2 mills. Superintendent Halverson forms a levy committee to study needs and lead a campaign while exploring budget cuts, program reductions, or a higher pupil to teacher ratio. Lorain Works will cut management ranks further before year end as 50 of 300-strong management staff remain. A source says half of the 100 remaining may lose jobs, with 200 management workers already laid off since the stoppage began. Workers receive 34 percent pay plus state unemployment. Reagan to have prostate surgery in January
President Reagan will undergo a transurethral resection of the prostate at Bethesda Naval Hospital on January 5 to relieve mild discomfort from an enlarged gland. Spokesman Speakes said no cancer is suspected. a colonoscopy will also be performed to check for recurrence of July 1985 colon cancer. He is expected to be hospitalized three to four days.
