Plans to feed needy Elyria families grow as a 24 act show at Elyria High School raises about 125 for the Not An Empty Stocking Fund. About 400 attended and 3100 had been received, with more expected from ticket sales and groups selling tickets. The event, sponsored by the Y M C A, featured local and professional entertainers and volunteers. 106 names of needy families were turned in, with more expected. Repeal of Undistributed Profits Tax Fails in Committee

Desperadoes' Alcatraz Escape Sparks Bay Search
San Francisco December 17 soldiers coast guardsmen and policemen blockaded the bay to find two Oklahoma desperadoes Ralph Roe 29 and Theodore Cole 23 who escaped from Alcatraz Island. They pried a fence jammed a lock and climbed to a rock ledge then vanished in fog possibly swimming the currents. Authorities worry they may have drowned or been picked up by a craft. Edward G. Stankard, 28, son of Police Chief J. Stankard, named by Service Director I. D. Faxon as a new police department appointment effective January 1. Civil service grade 59 percent. This is the second appointment by the director this week as the department nears full strength under the new ordinance. The department next year will have 20 patrolmen and seven officers. Stankard is 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighs 195 pounds, and lives with his parents at 338 Eleventh Street.

Bathroom Fire Damages Home on Huron Street
A kerosene stove, an open window and a curtain sparked a blaze in the bathroom of Mrs. May Cremeans at 132 Huron Street just before noon. Firemen estimated over 50 dollars in damage, saying wind blew the curtain into flame from the stove. Curtains, rug, window casing, floor and baseboard suffered burn damage. Hose Company No. 1 and Engine Company No. 3 answered the call.

Train Wreck In Michigan Injures Score On Pere Marquette Route
DETROIT December 17. A score of people were injured when four cars of a Pere Marquette passenger train derailed and plunged into a ditch en route to Bay City and Saginaw from Detroit. No deaths reported. Most seriously hurt was David Primeau a fireman whose right arm was crushed requiring amputation. Injured travelers include Catherine M. Worrilow of Long Beach California and Ella Collins of Willard Ohio.
