Static electricity focus in TWA 800 probe
SMITHTOWN NY AP investigators examine static electricity as a possible cause of the TWA Flight 800 explosion. NTSB officials say it is a possibility but not the only one as probes consider bombs, missiles, or mechanical malfunctions. The center fuel tank is suspected. FAA safety rules urge tank insulation and anti ignition measures. FBI chief James Kallstrom backs NTSB recommendations but demands hard evidence. Families of 230 dead press for answers as officials explain the probe’s narrowing focus on fuel pipe static and ignition temperatures.
