Lion saves woman on Pennine Moor in Langsett drama
Cassius the lion saved a 50 year old psychiatric patient who collapsed on snow covered moor as heat engineer Lew Foley stopped to walk his nine month old pet lion. The brothers found the unconscious woman and carried her to a police station before she was hospitalised and recovering. Police say the woman walked 16 miles from a psychiatric hospital to the Moor. Lew Foley said he keeps seven young lions and a tiger at his Birmingham home for charity events.

Delaware cancels all football bets after state reversal
Delaware lottery agents expect angry bettors as the state cancels all Touchdown II football wagers over the weekend to avoid potential payouts. Lottery Director Peter M. Simmons outlined refunds and noted heavy betting on lines predicting 49ers dominance over the Saints. Bets reached about $96,000 from roughly 26,000 cards amid suspicions of misaligned lines from Las Vegas. One bettor, Charles Wilson, vowed to sue if his bets win and refunds are denied.

Ammonia Fertilizer Creates Laughing Gas in Ozone Layer
Dayton AP reports researchers warn that ammonia fertilizer breaks down into compounds including nitrous oxide, a form of laughing gas, drifting into the ozone layer. Under UV light in the stratosphere the compounds react with ozone, producing oxygen and more nitrous oxide, potentially raising skin cancer risk. The study notes fertilizer use may rise fivefold by century’s end amid food demand.

LA man linked to vast desert arsenal stash
Police uncovered more than eight tons of military arms and explosives buried in bunkers near Lancaster and at a Pomona foundry, with cyanide powder found among the cache. Donald G. Wiggins of Ontario, 41, was jailed on bail and ordered to arraign Friday after admitting ownership but claiming someone else buried the weapons. The haul included a mortar and bazooka and could arm about 200 men, prompting officials to suspect a paramilitary group aiming to overthrow the government.
