Building Controls Relaxed as Housing Program Loses Lead

President Truman ordered an early relaxation of building controls affecting the Veterans Housing program after Wilson W. Wyatt quit his post in apparent disgust. Wyatt’s resignation followed an interagency clash over policy while the President pledged to proceed within the government’s policy framework. The American Veterans committee called the move an overwhelming defeat for homeless veterans, and CIO housing chair A. J. Thomas warned monopoly and scarcity had won a temporary victory. Truman faced difficulty naming a Wyatt successor amid few applicants.
