The Elyria Insurance Board elected trustees for two years Ralph W Standen William D Taylor and Howard H Benham and for one year A H Waters and L L Sotherden. Officers for the year ending October 1931 were R W Standen president H H Benham vice president and C L Sotherden secretary treasurer. A dinner and meeting at Elks restaurant on December 11 will feature a speaker and all members are urged to attend. The group aims to foster ethics and closer cooperation while studying insurance issues with visiting experts.
The Chronicle Telegram reports Warner Bros Theatres Co. has nearly completed negotiations to acquire the Capitol theatre in the city. Pending discussions have progressed to near culmination, according to a reliable Chronicle-Telegram source.
Washington, Dec. 5. President Hoover's 150 million unemployment relief program moved forward as Will Wood's appropriations panel planned swift action. Julius H. Barnes urged early passage with minimal debate while Democrats protested the method, noting relief funds fund already authorized projects and warning of a bad precedent.
Six escaped criminals including an acid killer a murderer and a pyromaniac elude New York City police after overpowering guards at Mattea wan State Hospital near Beacon. The gang fled in a car toward New York with one member Frank Van Der Kuylen seen entering his wife’s Manhattan apartment before being barred.
Charles E Tucker president of Elyria's Chamber of Commerce was reported slightly better at 1 45 p m today after a sudden illness Thursday afternoon. He was taken to his home and resting easily Friday afternoon, with details of his illness not yet determined.
Mrs Keith Brown of Middle Ridge Road is reported recovering from a fall at her home Monday. She fractured the base of her skull and could not be moved to a hospital due to her condition. Physicians say she is expected to recover.
The regular monthly meeting of Elyria Memorial Hospital physicians elected officers: President Dr. J. P. Rankin, Vice President Dr. G. A. Hoke, Secretary-Treasurer Dr. F. A. Lawrence. After adjournment, the doctors enjoyed refreshments.
Karl S. Kumler urged reducing the corporation franchise tax and overall government expenses at the Elyria Chamber of Commerce banquet. He proposed a state rural police force and a county manager form of government, plus lowering bond issues. He warned Ohio risks losing investment as taxes rose under a former governor to cover a $10 million deficit.
More than five hundred top spellers from Lorain County schools will compete for county honors tomorrow at Amherst High School. E L Bailey says the entrants advanced through district eliminations and will take part in both oral and written contests with prizes for grade champions and the county grand champion. The potential for a Northeastern Ohio district spelling contest is under consideration, with final action to be decided at the state teachers’ meeting in Columbus during Christmas vacation.
Berlin Dec 5 Chancellor Bruening warned the Reichstag against opposing the government financial decrees saying dissolution and dictatorial powers could follow if decrees are rescinded. He cited a 20 percent salary cut for top officials and similar reductions at private firms as part of emergency measures.
Oberlin College Glee Club will perform at Camden High School auditorium Tuesday evening December 7 at 8 15 under the senior class. Program includes solos miniature orchestra readings and group selections. The club is noted as a leading college vocal organization.
Rene Lefevre, famed for piloting the Yellow Bird on the trans Atlantic, is missing during a desert crossing from Oran to Colomb Bechar in a low powered tourist plane. He departed Tuesday, flying along the Sahara edge toward Colomb-Bechar, a region south and west of Oran where Arabs are described as unfriendly.
Lorain County Building Commission will meet next Thursday to tackle issues on the tuberculosis sanatorium project at Amherst. Chairman Charles Murray aims to start grading to create jobs, with Amherst Water Works officials and architect Frank Bail to attend. The hospital at the county home remains unfinished despite an ultimatum to contractor T. J. The Hyria Foremen's Club nominating committee meets Monday night at the YMCA to select two candidates for each office. Officers will be elected at the December 18 meeting and assume duties at the January session. Current officers are George Tulk president, Arthur Hiscox first VP, Harry Warren second VP, Glenn Broderick third VP, and W. C. McClellan secretary. Sixty nine crippled children from 21 Ohio cities were examined by Dr. Clarence Heyman of Cleveland and Dr. M. M. Clark of Elyria at the December crippled children clinic at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Betty Jean Hunter of Wellsville, seven, showed dramatic improvement, walking nearly normally. Kenneth Smith, two months, Ashland, was the youngest, while the oldest was 18. Children came from Ashland New London Lorain Elyria Wellsville Bellevue Cleveland Steubenville Knoxville Dorset Ashtabula Bucyrus Norwalk Nova West Salem Attica Mansfield North Fairfield Galion Sandusky Medina. Hoover called it an unusually large winter clinic.
The Pittsfield Township Farm Bureau will elect officers for the next year at its annual meeting tomorrow night in the Pittsfield M. E. church. A program of entertainment has been arranged for the gathering.
Elyria. Helen Nagy stood trial for selling whiskey to a 31 year old and a 15 year old on July 3. Her husband Steve Nagy, already serving a year at the state penitentiary for a prior liquor offense, testified for his wife. The jury of six men and six women received the case from Judge A. R. Webber this afternoon.
Delwin McBride aged 21 of 12 West Avenue and Howard Lescher aged 22 of 834 East Avenue returned to Elyria Memorial Hospital yesterday to have a gunshot removed from their wounds and to recover. The youths, with another Elyrian, were injured by gunfire and flying glass early Monday when an Abbe Road resident fired at them after a late visit. The assailant was released from county jail after promising to pay their hospital bills.
Gifford Cochran, 50, famed American sportsman from Yonkers, was found dead in his apartment hallway. Police say preliminary tests indicate natural causes. He led a prominent family fortune built from Alexander Smith and Sons Carpet Company. His horses formed the "Millionair Stable," with Flying Ebony winning the Kentucky Derby in 1925 under jockey Karl Sande.

An explosion and fire in Beloit Wisconsin destroyed four downtown stores including a dry goods shop clothing store grocery and jewelry store. Damage was estimated at 1 million dollars. Patrolman Lester Sheehan was injured by flying glass but other pedestrians escaped harm as Beloit and Rockford crews fought the flames.
