May Press New Tax Claim Against Mellon Estate
A Treasury official told United Press the Internal Revenue Service is considering a new estate tax claim against the Andrew Mellon estate. Data shows Mellon transferred securities valued at about 65,138,584 to his children Paul and Ailsa in 1929 and 1931 based on book values, with actual value potentially higher. If pursued, federal claims could total at least 50 million, though the charitable trust valued between 200 and 500 million may be exempt. The decision awaits Board of Tax Appeals rulings on Mellon's 1931 income tax deficiency of 3,075,103 with a 50 percent penalty, and is linked to whether the trust is tax exempt. The Coalesced Company, Delaware-formed for the benefit of his children, figures in the review, including substantial transfers to 1929 and 1931 and Mellon retaining 20 million in preferred stock. The inquiry also notes prior considerations on whether the company was created in contemplation of death.
