Boy On Way To Germany Hurt By Hit Skipper
Edward Fermelle a 16 year old Milwaukee youth traveling by bicycle toward New York City was struck by a hit and run driver four miles west of Elyria. He has been in the United States two years living with an uncle and desires to return to Germany to be with his parents. He suffered minor injuries and was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Authorities planned to detain him pending contact with federal immigration officials.

New Elyria Lorain Road Possibility Within Years
M D Shaffer, divisional state highway engineer, said a new Elyria to Lorain road could emerge in four to five years. The plan may reuse the defunct Yellow Line right of way or take a new course, offering a modern wide highway with fewer sharp turns. He noted Lake Avenue would be resurfaced and widened but warned the existing route’s turns and narrow width justify a new road. French Line Holds Normandie in New York Port
In New York on August 30 1940 the French Line ordered the Normandie to remain moored pending a customs search under a U S policy for inspecting ships of nations that could become belligerents. The 83 000 ton liner was slated to sail at 10 A M but was delayed as authorities checked for arms and contraband amid protests by German operators and questions to the German embassy.
