Berlin reports cautious optimism over Hitler's reply to Britain's final peace offer on Poland and the European crisis. Chamberlain told Parliament Britain stands ready for any eventuality, pledging wartime defense and urging an end to border clashes. Mobilization and preparations spread as nations brace for possible war.
An Elyria man and a Amherst township boy are in critical condition after separate car crashes. Lee W. Perkins 47 of 630 Lodi Street suffered brain injuries when his car overturned on Telegraph Road near Milton Bays Farm while returning from Amherst after a haircut. LeRoy Bartlome 6 of North Ridge Road near Leavitt Road sustained fractures and head injuries after being struck by a car driven by Sarah Sims of Oberlin near his home. Bartlome was treated at Amherst Hospital. Perkins was hospitalized at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Perkins had planned to attend the State Fair in Columbus with friends.
The grand jury will convene September 5 to consider pending criminal cases. Among them is the bank robbery charge against Stanley Korowski of Lorain, arrested July 11 after the Ip ton Bank robbery, with $900 stolen. Korowski allegedly led the trio and may have linked with a Be rea robbery weeks earlier. Other scheduled cases include Sempberger, Maloy, Jaffs store burglary, Glenn race, Taylor, Young, Katz, Kelsey, Erdy, Walter Feldt, Rob ert and William Plas, and Robert Schnur for burglary.
Joe Schaeffer died from chest injuries after a crash during a trial run for the Horace Dodge cat Delphine IX in Detroit on Labor Day. He was slated to pilot the boat in upcoming races.

Paris reports say Germany mobilized along the Polish frontier and pressed encroachments on rail lines while evacuations and diplomatic moves heightened tension. Henderson’s talks with Hitler yielded no peace prospect. Britain pressed for peaceful settlement and warned against border provocations.
Lorain County WPA projects will not face major disruption as a new rule dismisses workers after 18 months. Elyria Lorain Oberlin LaGrange and South Amherst officials were briefed by WPA officials in Akron about recertification after the 18 month term and a 30 day waiting period before returning to work. Officials foresee a staggered schedule to minimize impact on local recreation programs amid staffing concerns.
The Sheffield village caucus met in the town hall to nominate candidates for village offices and the school board. Mayor Clyde McAllister was elected chairman, Andrew Schmitz named secretary, with nominees including McAllister for mayor, Schmitz for clerk, Mrs. Josephine Dechant for treasurer, Fred Winter for marshal, councilmen Conrad Dechant Moats Traxler Bruder and Eiden, and school board members E. D. Hoag E. B. Brown and B. Jungbluth.
In Columbus on August 2, the Division of Aid for the Aged announced Ohio's old age pension roll hit 119,013 recipients, with total grants of 2,605,615 dollars. The prior high was 117,739 pensioners receiving 2,681,580 dollars in July, and since January the roll has risen by 7,699 beneficiaries.
Two armed men robbed the Miller Main street branch of the Ohio National Bank in Columbus, taking about 5000 dollars. They herded eight customers and four of five employees into a rear room and forced them to lie on the floor while they worked a time lock not opening until shortly before 12:30. The pair fled in a car with Indiana plates.
A blaze in a large pile of steel shavings at the Alex Myman junk yard at West Railroad and Rush streets drew a noon call for the local fire department. Squad Company No. 1 and Hose Company No. 3 extinguished the fire with no damage reported. Spontaneous combustion was blamed.
New York August 29 United Press customs agents searched the liner Bremen and delayed its sailing to determine if it carried implements of war banned by presidential proclamation. Immigrant passengers were rounded up at Ellis Island for routine checks and had no connection with the liners inspection. Police and Coast Guard guarded the pier as the search proceeded.
Wellington, Aug 29. Voters caucus on 36 candidates for 20 offices in town and township. Polls run 2 to 8 pm in one booth at the band room of the town hall with separate ballots for town, township residents and school district residents outside the township. Nominees on the single People s Ticket are typically unopposed in November.
Italian afternoon newspapers bannerlined today that the European situation was growing more critical. il Picelli said Britain’s note to Hitler would seem to exclude any serious possibility of conciliation. Resto Del Carlina blamed Jews for the present situation and warned that if Italy is forced to fight the war will be fascist, proletarian and anti-Jewish. The papers linked Roosevelt with Jews and claimed totalitarian states see him as their enemy for poisoning U.S. relations with Germany and Italy. Earlier reports said Mussolini was seeking a peace formula.
Convoy resident Burton Wolfcase died when his automobile collided with a car driven by Kenneth Stemen near Convoy Ohio. Stemen’s car went into a 10 foot ditch. Stemen and passenger Junior Lehr survived with minor injuries.
Swiss authorities set measures to defend the frontiers with border ports prepared for an estimated 100,008 military personnel. The effort reflects heightened security and mobilization at border areas in response to perceived threats.
London Ohio dispatch reports Raymond McMahon, 23, captured in Logansport Indiana after escaping from the Ohio Prison Farm on Aug 21 with three other inmates. McMahon, serving 20 years to life for bank robbery, aided by Blood and Lipps, purportedly planned a store burglary for guns to back a bank robbery.
Moscow delay postpones ratification of the Soviet German non aggression pact at least until September 1 as the council of nationalities plans a joint session with the Soviet Union council on August 31 to discuss a military service measure. Molotov may use the period to assess developments before any action is taken.
A Tarnov railway station blast blamed on German saboteurs killed 18 and wounded 30, with earlier reports noting seven dead and two Germans arrested. In Bratislava, a Polish officer’s death in a frontier clash heightened fears as Germany prepared to move troops to guard the border.
London dispatch reports Russian sources said the Soviet Union may scrap its non aggression pact with Germany if Germany attacks Poland. The postponement of ratification was described as a potential ultimatum and deterrent amid rising tensions in Europe.

Berlin August 29 Adolf Hitler, in his new chancellery study, worked on a reply to a message delivered by Sir Nevile Henderson the British ambassador. Henderson departed Tempelhof with an aide after a late 50 minute talk as Hitler pressed to finalize his response.
