A Greek ferry Heleanna exploded from natural gas during cooking, sending 1,086 rescued but 34 bodies recovered and 37 missing as Brindisi port officials reported varying totals. Passengers from Italy Greece Germany France and Switzerland fled into the Adriatic as the ship burned and sank.
An Ilyushin 18 operated by Marlev of Hungary crashed into the sea four miles off the Danish coast near Kastrup. Of 34 aboard, six bodies were recovered and three survivors were hospitalized in Copenhagen. Twenty five others are missing as SKIN DIVERS recovered the initial wreckage. The Danish navy located the plane with a helicopter after the crash one minute before landing. The survivors include one woman and two men. Weather and sea conditions hinder recovery efforts.
