Ferry Heleanna catches fire on Adriatic voyage

A ferry with about 1,000 on board caught fire in the Adriatic between Greece and Italy. At least 30 people died and 850 to 870 were rescued as the 11,232 ton Heleanna burned for over six hours and drifted 25 miles off Brindisi. Survivors said panic and scenes of terror as passengers abandoned ship into rough seas.

Storm Doria floods Eastern Seaboard with damage and outages

Tropical storm Doria weakened as it moved through New York New Jersey and Connecticut causing heavy rains and flooding from Maryland to Maine. It centered in western Connecticut mid morning and had 70 mph winds at the New Jersey shore with gusts near 75 mph in Bridgeport. Power lines were down in Connecticut and Newark Bay declared a state of emergency after several inches of rain flooded streets and disrupted services.

Partly cloudy and mild today with a 30 percent rain chance. Highs reach the mid to upper 70s. Tonight remains fair and cool with patchy fog and lows in the low to mid 50s. U.S. jets attack DMZ gun sites in new raid

U.S. Air Force F4 Phantom crews were fired on during a bombing mission over the Ho Chi Minh supply corridor in Laos. The airmen destroyed the gun site in North Vietnamese territory in the 53rd protective reaction raid of the year. B52 bombers struck the southern DMZ half, while artillery and jet-fighter raids hit the buffer zone. Australian destroyer Brisbane fired on 47 targets including suspected troop concentrations and bunkers.

Explosion hits California corrections office in 17-story tower

An anonymous caller from the Weatherman group warned of a blast that demolished restrooms on the sixth floor of the Department of Corrections in Sacramento. There were no injuries, but the 17-story tower sustained thousands of dollars in structural damage as water pipes and electrical lines were severed.

Fighting resumes at Mutula border town Uganda

Fighting broke out again yesterday between Tanzanian and Ugandan forces at the border town of Mutula, according to Uganda Radio. The pollen count is provided by Elyria Health Department and Lorain Community Hospital with Lorain 34 Elyria 138.

Lorain County fair draws crowd as Roy Clark headlines

Lorain County fair in Wellington attracted 30 499 attendees despite showers and overcast conditions. Fair treasurer Walter Young reported 95 262 visitors in the first four days, close to last year, with Roy Clark set for two Grandstand shows at 7 and 9 p.m. tonight.

Bennett A Cerf publisher TV star and writer died at his Mount Kisco home at 73 Police said he was dead on arrival last night Cerf founded Random House in 1927 and created Modern Library He appeared on Whats My Line from 1952 to 1966 He was a director of RCA and Alfred A Knopf and chaired the Peabody Awards Committee from 1955 to 1967 He was born May 25 1898 and authored several books including Try and Stop Me Laughing Stock Anything for a Laugh Encyclopaedia of American Humor Life of the Party and Treasury of Atrocious Puns
