Cohns Hollywood Fireball Creates Stars From Scraps
In a 1927 Hollywood profile, Harry Cohn the Columbia mogul is praised for hiring talent as needed rather than contracting stars. The feature recalls Grace Moore, Jean Arthur, Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert, Ronald Colman and Gary Cooper rising to stardom through his belief in good pictures and open-market casting. On set dramas include a stunt mishap injuring Scott Colton and colorfully recounted anecdotes about Irene Dunne, Richard Arlen, and Luli Deste. The piece notes production staff banter, citizenship stories, and a director’s diplomacy amid on set chaos.
