Killed In Auto Crash Near Newark
Frederick Yost aged 25 from Thornville died when his car overturned and plunged through a guard rail nearly a mile and a half southwest of Newark. Passenger Merle Patterson, 23, driver, was cut and bruised in the crash occurred last night.

F W Dean of the State Department of Forestry told county officials the historic elm at the southwest corner of the courthouse grounds is not at risk from lightning rod attachments. The board spent 65 dollars on paraphernalia but would remove it if it harmed the tree. Dean said the elm appeared healthy, likely 300 to 600 years old, with a diameter near six feet, and there is no factual basis for the claim that copper nails kill a tree.

Akron August 25 The United Rubber Workers of America won the right to be sole bargaining agent for Goodyear Tires and Rubber Co employees in a National Labor Relations Board election Tuesday. Probe Collision of Tanker and Fish Boat Near Lorain Harbor
Investigation opened into a collision eight miles from Lorain harbor between the Gulf Refining Company tanker Harmony and a 30 foot trap net fishing boat. Four crew members aboard the boat were involved, one man jumped overboard but returned to the vessel. Harmony towed the damaged boat into port.

Stolen Baby Found on Chicago Doorstep
Chicago police displayed new swaddling clothes as they seek a woman who stole three month old Diane Lucas from her carriage and abandoned her on a north side doorstep less than a day later. Diane was found unharmed on the rear steps of a north side apartment after an anonymous tip to police. A caller said a baby would be found on the rear steps at 7420 Damen Avenue.

Suit For Injunction Studied By Judge

Leander Shropshire 27 of 432 Fifteenth St died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a late night car crash on Route 20 caused by dense fog. He and passenger Ralph Hopewell 22 of 323 Seventeenth St were returning from Cleveland when the car hit a tree. Shropshire fractured skull and Hopewell lightly hurt. Two county road jobs let this year by the Lorain County commissioners are nearing completion after an inspection trip. Chestnut Ridge road widening and resurfacing at about 54000 is ready for surface treatment and should finish in a few weeks weather permitting. Gilea road in Eaton township improvements at about 23000 are finished except for berm leveling. The Abbe road bridge north of Route 20 is nearly done as crews fill in land for approaches.

Survivors Improve After Vermilion Huron Car Crash
Funeral arrangements for Chance Mitchem 37 and Kenneth Postal 26 are being completed at Beecher and Stein funeral homes while Ernest Attebury 25 of Vermilion is in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital Sandusky. The trio riding north on Route 61 in a small coupe failed to navigate a curve and plunged 25 feet into an embankment around 1:30 am Tuesday. Mitchem and Attebury were ejected, Postal trapped. The body of Mitchem is held at Beecher Funeral Home in Vermilion. Postal’s body remains at Stein Funeral Home in Huron. Authorities say the exact cause remains under investigation.

Lorain Bridge Reduced Swing During Dredging Operations
County commissioners said after a meeting with Great Lakes Tow ing and Dredging officials the Erie avenue bridge will swing 50 percent less during dredging. Crews will change at the American Shipbuilding dock, eliminating ten bridge swings. Dredging will run five river trips per day with a million dollar dredge and ten cubic yard scoop. Scows transport muck six miles to the lake, each trip carrying 1,600 cubic yards.
