Hog market goes computer in Ozark operations
Two major Ozark hog marketing operations in Missouri have adopted desk top computers and high speed printers to sort hogs by weight, prepare sale orders, and print checks. Hollis Smith of West Plains says the system costs about 50000 but will pay for itself quickly, weighing and classing pigs within seconds and enabling rapid sales of thousands of feeder pigs. The Missouri Farmers Association also uses computers for feeder pig sales.

Embargo hurt Soviet grain despite UPI report
Washington report says the partial grain embargo, begun January 4 in response to the Afghanistan invasion, has had its intended effect but several farmer and taxpayer groups contend it hurts American farmers. The Agriculture Department lowered the Soviet shortfall estimate to 6 million tons, noting Russia faced reduced meat and dairy output, while injections of soybeans from other sources were possible.
