Suffrage at 60 highlights slow gains in political power

Sixty years after the 19th Amendment, Lorain and nearby counties show women still underrepresented in office. In Lorain County 5 to 1 men outnumber women among 365 officials. 11 of 65 women hold clerk treasurer posts with no voting power. Cleveland and western suburbs show similar gaps. Nationally, women remain underrepresented in Congress, state legislatures, and federal courts. Former Elyria mayor Marguerite Bowman says lack of political ambition, not discrimination, hinders progress.
