Merck Sharpe & Dohme expects vaccine shipments to reach Ohio by mid November able to protect over a million residents. In Cleveland James Pierson, 65, a retired laborer, fatally shot his epileptic brother Samuel and then killed himself with a .22 caliber pistol on Friday night, describing the act as mercy.
Robert Radek 19 of Cleveland was stabbed to death during an argument at Whitman’s Market on the east side. Louis Whitman 37, store owner, told police the assailant fled after Radek chased him inside. Radek died at Mt. Sinai hospital from two chest wounds.
Northeastern and Northwestern Ohio see highs of 78 to 83 with showers ending tonight and cooler air. Sunday remains cool with fair skies, lows 57 to 62. Friday forecast shows highs to 86 with no 24 hour precipitation. humidity around 79 percent at 8 p.m. Southwest winds shift to northeast this afternoon and tonight. small craft advisory remains for Lake Erie since Friday evening.
In Dixon Tl, a floodlit muddy quarry yielded the bodies of Nancy 10 Theresa 8 and Ruthie 9 Guernsey after searchers toiled through Friday night. Police see no signs of foul play though the sisters had been playing near the rim Wednesday afternoon.
Washington sources say the AFL CIO will press Teamsters faced with corruption allegations to answer charges. The Senate Rackets Committee accuses Hoffa of ties to gangsters and questionable financial deals as the Teamsters prepare for a convention where Hoffa’s leadership may be challenged.
The Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council urged the National Building Trades Department to withdraw from AFL-CIO until disputes are resolved. Lorain County delegates backed the move at the 39th annual convention in Dayton with Alton Page signing the resolution.
The grand champion steer sold for 72 cents a pound, a Lorain County Junior Fair Steer Sale record. Hubert Heilman of Heilman's Restaurant, Lorain, bought the 965-pound Black Angus at auction from Arthur Grills of the Oberlin 4-H Club, who had the grand champion for the second year.
Lt Col Walter P. Berger of Philadelphia, a career officer with World War II and Korea service, is acquitted by a general court martial on four negligent homicide counts and one dereliction of duty related to the June 22 mortar shell incident that killed four trainees and injured 13 at Fort Sill.
Prague Radio reported that Czechoslovakia is constructing multiple industrial plants in Egypt. One plant is described as handling the production of steel drums for public use.
The Soviet Navy claims Western planes and ships harassed its fleet en route to Albania from the Baltic. Russian dispatch says British and West German aircraft buzzed the ships and nearly touched decks while a “mystery schooner” tried to collide. Britain and the British Admiralty deny knowledge of the charges.
A Birmingham man, Charles Russell Hayes, 21, died at Amherst Hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Route 113 near South Amherst. Three others, Mrs. Sarah Denny 52, Roy Denny 12, and Mrs. Doris Denny 25, were treated and released for injuries. The Denny truck was rear‑ended by Hayes’s car. Eastbound vehicles were involved. Hayes, a National Tube Co. employee, had lived in Birmingham eight years.
Federal authorities in Baltimore seized a former Red Army captain posing as a Hungarian freedom fighter. Identified as Junia Paktorovich, he entered the U S last October with his wife two daughters and a sister-in-law. He is held for deportation to Austria.
A planeload of Russians including women and children was spotted in Athens en route from Bulgaria to Soviet-armed Syria. Reports say Soviet volunteers are pouring into Syria as Deputy Undersecretary Loy W. Henderson travels to Ankara to discuss a political quarantine of Syria with Turkish leaders. The scene reflects high diplomatic activity surrounding the Middle East.
