Kerr-McGee settles Silkwood suit for 1.38 million

Kerr-McGee Corp will pay the Silkwood estate 1.38 million to settle a decade-old plutonium contamination lawsuit. The 10.5 million jury award was overturned on appeal. About 500,000 goes to Silkwood’s three children and the rest to attorneys.

Cyanide poisoned worker still critical

Avon Lake officials asked Rycon Specialized Plating Co to pause operations after an employee, John Hyatt Jr., 33, of Amherst, inhaled sodium cyanide dust at the plant. Hyatt remained in critical condition at Lorain Community Hospital. Nine other workers had blood tests. OSHA and state agencies were notified. The incident is under investigation to determine how the poisoning occurred.
