Communist shore batteries unleashed a two hour bombardment of the Nationalist island group Quemoy firing more than 50000 high explosive shells. The National Defense Ministry reported no immediate casualties or damage. Sources warned of possible prolonged fatigue bombardment aimed at wearing down the garrison on little Quemoy.
