July CPI Holds Steady as Mortgage Decline Offsets Rises

Washington reports the July cost of living did not rise for the first time in 13 years. A 5.7 percent drop in mortgage rates offset increases in food, clothing, medical care, and transportation, leaving the CPI flat from June to July. Food rose 0.9 percent, gasoline fell for the third straight month after seasonal adjustments. The CPI reference shows 1967 dollars now worth about 40.4 cents, with the index at 247.8.

In Memoriam Lester Rivera A Echoes of a Tragic Night

Lester Rivera a 17 year old Elyria Catholic football star died from an acute brain blood clot after a field injury sustained during an intrasquad scrimmage. He collapsed on the field and never regained consciousness despite five minutes of awareness. His father Dr. Jose Rivera was at the scene and helped. The Lorain County coroner ruled the death due to unknown trauma leading to a clot in the brain.

Majoras Ambulance Firm Faces EMT Certification Gap

John Majoras owner of an Elyria ambulance service and an employee have not held current EMT A certification for two years. They failed a required refresher course in August 1979, per Ohio State Department of Education and LCJVS instructor George Matelsky. Majoras and Holloway drove ambulances only with certified EMTs and could face fines if uncertified.

Polish strike wave widens as dissidents rounded up in Warsaw

Police detained 24 dissidents in Warsaw amid a broad strike wave across Poland. Reports say over 120,000 workers are on strike at Baltic coast cities with 420 plants closed by nightfall. arrests include leaders from the Committee of Independent Poland and the Committee for Social Self-Defense. The United States urged release of those seized as protests followed lifting meat subsidies in early July.
