Soviet Nuclear Submarine Fire Kills Nine Off Okinawa

A Soviet Echo 1 class submarine caught fire in international waters near Okinawa. Nine crew members were killed and three injured as the Meridian rescued about 20 others. A British tanker and Japanese patrol craft responded while concerns about radiation were raised.

Polish shipyard strike chiefs replaced as general walkout looms

Poland’s government removed Tadeusz Pyka from heading the special commission negotiating with shipyard strikers and named First Deputy Premier Mieczyslaw Jagielski to take over. Jagielski, credited with resolving prior Lublin protests, faced a largely unimpressed reception at Lenin Shipyard as new strikes emerged in Kielce. Reports of a two day general strike circulated amid arrests of KOR members and church involvement via Cardinal Wyzynski as the crisis deepened.

Weather outlook showers and storms unsettled tonight

Showers and thunderstorms are likely through tonight with variable clouds. Lows will be in the mid 60s. Friday will be partly cloudy with highs around the low 80s. Precipitation chances are 60 percent tonight and 20 percent Friday as west to northwest winds run about 10 mph. Details on Page B6.

Two girls vanish after county fair in Middleburg Heights

Alice Payne 16 and Sandy Whitney 17 were last seen Aug 5 at the Cuyahoga County Fair in Berea. Their families search from Middleburg Heights to Washington PA with no leads as police report no new information. Both attended nearby schools and never saw each other much this past year. The teens were in a metallic green 1972 car when last seen.

End Near for Les LORAIN-Elyria Catholic Player Lester Rivera

Lester Rivera a 17-year-old football player from Lorain was on a respirator at Elyria Memorial Hospital as his condition worsened. Doctors reported minimal brain activity and deteriorating reflexes with low blood pressure and cold, stiff extremities. His father Dr. Jose Rivera said the death likely comes soon and prepared for funeral plans in western Lake County.

Shuttle buses ease mud at Lorain County Fair

Rain turning the fairground parking lot into mud holes prompted officials to run free shuttle buses from the high school to the fairgrounds. Fair Board President Carl Diedrick Jr. rode the service and noted strong public response as 24 220 people visited the fair on Wednesday.
