Persistent rain drenched the Lorain County Fairgrounds Wellington delaying events on the final day. Harness racing was moved to this afternoon along with horse pull steer show and sale Little League baseball and two Ward Beam Thrill Show performances to cap the program.
About 3600 employees in five Elyria plants will get three cent hourly raises under escalator clauses in UAW contracts. Plants affected include Bendix-Westinghouse Air Brake, Western Automatic Machine Screw, Brown-Chapin General Motors division, Brown Fintube, and Handler L. The national CIO UAW scope exceeds one million workers. General Motors and Ford also plan three cent increases for hourly workers next month, with GM detailing amounts and timing through December. The index-based adjustment uses the BLS figures with rent bias adjustments noted by GM.
Parker C. Williams of Cleveland will occupy the pulpit at the First Methodist Church this Sunday serving as guest preacher. Mrs. Janice Ruth Hume is the soloist and the Ohio Temperance League oversees the service. The summer series concludes next week with Dr. Clark W. Cooper and Eleanor Seitman delivering youth division talks.

Wellington resident and longtime trucker Gib Hines, 72, is in fair condition at Massillon Hospital after a Wednesday crash near Canal Fulton. His truck struck a dump truck carrying ten tons of sand, propelling Hines under the other vehicle and causing punctured lung, near-severed ears, rib fractures and a shoulder injury. He and wife Stella live east of town. he is brother to Willis Hines. He will be moved to a closer hospital when stable.
Mrs Ellen Sullivan aged 95 registered to vote in Lewiston Maine for the first time saying she is disgusted with how the country is run and chose the Republican party in the election.
Seoul reports warplanes pounded Communist troop concentrations on both coasts while ground troops repelled Chinese attacks on Bunker Hill near Panmunjom. Sabrejets damaged two MiG-15s south of the Suiho Dam as F-51 Mustangs struck near Wonsan and B-26 bombers hit Anakji. Chinese losses and probing attacks continue as searchlights brighten the front.
Navy reports four killed and 53 wounded when Communist shore batteries hit the U S destroyer mine sweeper Thompson off Songjin Korea. The attack damaged the pilot house and navigating gear as the ship joined a strike on Songjin harbor. Wounded were taken to the battleship Iowa. ten in serious condition.
Senate Republicans praised President Truman for saying Governor Stevenson must run on the Roosevelt Truman record. They argued Stevenson cannot escape the Truman legacy and must campaign on it, with Nixon aiding the chorus and Summerfield predicting Stevenson is shaped by the current administration.
In fog seven miles from the California coast the Swedish S S Stratus and American freighter S S Coos Bay collided. Stratus reports no casualties while Coos Bay takes on water and crew abandon to lifeboats. Tugboats dispatched to assist.
The Bureau of Internal Revenue reports Ohioans paid a record 4.5 billion dollars in income taxes for the year ended June 30, with a 38 percent rise from the prior year. Corporate taxes climbed 54 percent to 1.648 billion, while individual taxes rose 32 percent. Northeast Ohio’s Cleveland district accounted for 2.594 billion, more than half the state total, with Cincinnati 1.034 billion, Toledo 571.6 million, and Columbus 332 million.

Mrs. Donna Bowman 57 of 313 Church Street died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a Route 301 collision near LaGrange last Friday. She suffered a skull laceration and arm injuries, survived by husband Arthur and children Maxine, Arthur Jr, Clifford, and two grandchildren. a sister and a Parma sister also noted. Funeral services set with Rev. N M Weyrick officiating at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Wilburton Oklahoma reports a Scout camp supervisor found a second sack of antique gold rings along a creek near Robbers Cave State Park. Dave Bloxham says 183 old wedding bands have been recovered, possibly linked to Belle Starr gang loot or to Pretty Boy Floyd's era.
Columbus The State Health Department reported 86 new polio cases, lifting Ohio’s total to 1,061. Acting chief Dr. Frederick Wentworth said the rise is not alarming as some cases reflect accumulated counts. Cuyahoga County led with 47 cases, followed by Medina with eight and Franklin County with two.
Washington John L Lewis informed the Federal Mediation Service that secret wage negotiations with the coal industry failed to yield an agreement. He warned of a strike date September 20 for northern soft coal and September 30 for southern and anthracite fields, timed to the contract expirations. The Taft-Hartley notice, signed by UMW counsel Welly K Hopkins, signals a 30 day advance walkout window.

Mrs Gladys Berman saw a burglar outside her doorway and phoned police but the intruder grabbed the telephone and directed officers to another address before fleeing.
The Elyria Community Chest trustees set a 1953 campaign goal of 137,392 for October 20 to 30, a 5.6 percent rise from 1952. The budget and admissions committee recommended increases for eight of 12 local agencies and included one state agency and six national agencies in the United Defense Fund. Local agency allocations total 111,474, up 3.9 percent. 19 campaigns include the Ohio Citizen's Council for Health and Welfare and the United Defense Fund entities.
Norman J. Kaiser of LaGrange Road suffered a broken back in a railroad yard accident in Elyria Youngstown area. He is listed in fair condition at South Side Unit Hospital of Youngstown where hospital officials report his status as of late Tuesday afternoon.
New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan and California paid as much in federal taxes as all other states combined, per a Bureau of Internal Revenue 1952 breakdown. New York led with 12.24 billion. Ohio ranked sixth with 4.53 billion. Nevada posted the smallest collection.
Donald Bever of Vermilion must place above tenth in the final Star class race to clinch the Great Lakes championship trophy. He led on points with 73 but a poor wind day and gear damage could end his title bid as 22 boats started the Vermilion event amid light air and small craft warnings. A dinner and trophy presentation were planned for tonight at McGarvey’s in Vermilion after the races.
