U S forces shoot down two Libyan SU-22s after being fired upon during a training run 60 miles off the Libyan coast. The Reagan administration denounces the attack as unprovoked and warns Khadafy’s regime to refrain from further challenges. U S and Libyan officials trade strong statements while urging Americans in Libya to leave.
Report notes Libyan authorities deny reprisals after Tuesday air attack. Reagan administration officials suggest the strike was not wholly unexpected and question who bears responsibility. Page A-4.

In Oberlin, Lou Rotano of Convenient Food Mart seeks Lorain County ballot approval to allow carryout beer wine and diluted liquor in three precincts bounded by East College South Main East Hamilton and South Pleasant. He says costs demand the permit and already has about 238 signatures. If approved, licenses may trigger a townwide scramble for new permits amid a history of temperance opposition.
Herbert Fleming age 35 of Sheffield Lake and Scott Rupert 17 of Avon Lake set out in a 14 foot rowboat from Sheffield Lake toward Leamington Ontario. After hours of rough seas a French Canadian fishing vessel picked them up about 16 miles north northwest of Lorain. Coast Guard had launched a helicopter search beginning at 8 am but contact was not made. The pair appeared tired but unharmed.
A head on collision on Route 58 left Amherst residents Martin Metz 27 and Debbie Metz 24 dead while Elyria man Robert L. Treadwell 31 was listed in critical condition at Lorain Community Hospital. The victims rode a motorcycle from Amherst Mobile Home Park near Route 113.
Troopers from Elyria post report a northbound Route 58 crash near Webster Road at 7 10 p m when a car crossed center and struck a motorcycle. Metz and his wife were ejected and not wearing helmets. Both vehicles overturned off the west side. Treadwell was hospitalized and authorities continue the investigation while Wainwright Funeral Home handles arrangements.
Forecast calls for clear weather with a low in the mid 50s. Mostly sunny tomorrow with highs in the mid 60s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph today, easing to 5 to 10 mph tonight.
An American agriculture team met in Japan to press for broader concessions as Japan imposes a limited ban on California produce amid fears of the Medfly. Japan had sought to halt all California shipments, but after talks with U.S. diplomats the ban targets only infested areas. Sunkist spokeswoman Ann Warring welcomed what she called a prudent decision.
