President Reagan says he approved U S warplane maneuvers that crossed into disputed Libyan air space to back up exercises near the Gulf of Sidra and Liberty clash. He warned Libya might fire first and vowed that U S forces would shoot back if fired upon, as Navy F-14s and the carrier Nimitz conducted maneuvers off California.

Sheffield Lake men Herbert Fleming and Scott Rupert who set out to cross Lake Erie in a rowboat reached Wheatley Ontario after spending a night in a motel there. Coast Guard reports say they rowed about 20 to 25 miles before giving up, exhausted but safe. Fleming’s wife traveled to Canada to pick them up and they may not return home until today.
