Gilligan unveils austerity plan to close $40 million deficit

Gov. John J. Gilligan warned that if the General Assembly does not approve a balanced two year budget by Sept. 1, Ohio would enact an austerity program. The plan would lay off about 2,840 workers, cut salaries, close 44 of 55 parks, and reduce aid to schools and welfare. State finance officials say these steps could wipe out deficits and leave Ohio in the black by February.

Gas clouds escape as derailed cars explode near Spencer

A freight train derailment near Spencer in Medina County released large clouds of acrylonitrile and carbine gases. Wind kept most residents safe though fears of evacuation lingered. two cars exploded, releasing up to 12 000 gallons each while fire crews battled the blaze.

Administration vows to enforce wage-price freeze nationwide

Washington officials vow no exceptions to the Nixon administration wage-price freeze amid labor and state opposition. Calley term cut to 20 years in My Lai murder case

Lt. William L. Calley, sentenced for the My Lai massacre, had his life term reduced to 20 years by Lt. Gen. Albert C. Connor of the Third Army. The decision follows the Vietnam War era killings of 22 Vietnamese civilians.

Ground broken for second Elyria high school this year

Groundbreaking ceremonies for a new Elyria high school off Griswold Road marked the start of construction. The $3.5 million project is funded by a $7.25 million 1966 bond issue and aims to serve 1,000 students with future expansion to 2,000, part of a larger campus including Crestwood Elementary. Public officials, educators, and Township trustees attended, praising strong community support and predicting the facility as a monument to education.
