In Lynch Kentucky on August 19 five men, three white and two African American, were killed instantly when a roof collapsed during repairs at United Electric. The tragedy occurred as workers were on the structure, the roof tangling down in a deadly fall.
It will be necessary to continue a one mill special tax to defray costs of construction maintenance and improvement of county roads under the current policy of good roads Frank Ellenberger county clerk states voters will decide again in November. The levy has passed twice before and funds about 175000 yearly with possible additions to total 179009 if approved by the county tax.
Aug 19 LOSIGN Ohio Aged Civil War veteran reveals he was known as Matt Green when enlisted in 1848 and served under a different name for 70 years. He claimed to be Robert R Livingstone, son of the man who arranged the Louisiana treaty, and spoke from a hospital after mishap during a national G A R encampment. The man also served 17 years in the navy and earned several medals.
Sheriff Underhill arrested three men driving on the South Amherst road. Andy Kaikya is charged with driving while intoxicated and Pari fan Undt and Ben Zucike are charged with being under the influence of liquor. Their hearing, along with others set for today, has been continued until Thursday.
In Los Angeles on August 19 district attorney Asa Keyes sought an indictment against Kid McCoy for the murder of Teresa Mors. McCoy, deemed sane by alienists, caused a near riot in his jail cell, shouting, shaking bars, and claiming he was in a padded cell guarded to prevent him from winning the world middleweight title. He produced paper strips as “mouse traps” and claimed Teresa visited him that morning while vowing to see him again. Police planned hospital restraint if violence continued.
In Chicago on August 19 Michael Becker entered Meyer Greenberg’s shop and demanded redress for an insult. Barbers Jim Becker was stabbed twice with shears during the altercation while Miss Bernberg, 19, sat in the chair and remained calm. Police removed Becker to Mount Sinai hospital as patrons fled in panic.
Oberlin resident W C Christy injured Saturday when his auto collided with a Black and Tan bus on the Cleveland road. Authorities report slight improvement today but consciousness not fully regained, with hospital conditions described as potentially still dangerous. Driver E W Spaulding said a car ahead brake stalled the line and he veered into the bus path to avoid women and children aboard. Plan discussed in Washington to pursue a new China policy through talks with Jacob Gould Schurman, the U S minister to Peking, returning from Shanghai.
Nebraska Governor Charles W. Bryan accepted the Democratic vice presidency amid a large crowd at the University of Nebraska Memorial Stadium. Clem Shaver and party aides outlined a speaking tour covering the agricultural Midwest, with emphasis on export marketing and defense issues.
Italian aviator plans to fly to Greenland with Americans after repairs. Lt Lowell Smith and Lt Frik Nelson plan a Cape Farewell crossing, with spare parts arriving aboard the U S cruiser Richmond. Jocatelli, the Italian distance flyer, awaits to accompany them.
The city council approved several special ordinances last night including Beech Street sanitary sewer costing 693 dollars, Poplar Street and Bonair Avenue project at 2560 dollars, Lake Avenue paving at 9862 dollars, Concord Street water main 275 dollars, Beech Street drainage 1048 dollars, Lorain Boulevard and Warden Avenue water main, Longfellow Street water main 3337 dollars, and Middle Avenue water main 1756 dollars.
Seventeen year old Eva Martis wife of Fred Martis files suit through her sister Bernice Whitney in Monroe Michigan asking for a divorce. She alleges laziness and failure to provide a home. The marriage began last May and Eva requests restoration of her maiden name Eva Webber.

The City Council empowered Service Director James Hewitt to hire a sanitary engineer to conduct a complete sewer and sewage survey as a fore runner to meeting a State Board of Health order. The city has until June 1925 to erect required facilities, following the order.
A State Board of Health member visiting Elyria says the city and four factories fail to meet state orders to remedy polluting Black River. The plant emitting poison vapors that injure shrubs and trees could be liable for damages. Elyria’s anti smoke ordinance names Fire Chief Bates as smoke inspector, but residents report persistent heavy smoke and damaged washings and paint.
The council discusses a massive overhaul of Elyria’s sewer and sewage system to eliminate river pollution and prevent surface water from backing into sewers. A sanitary survey will estimate costs, potentially up to half a million dollars, funded by local taxes. The State Board of Health views the disposal plant as essential, with several plants urged to comply.
Lorain Ohio August 19 The new People’s Church led by Rev T Howard Jones former pastor of the 20th Street Methodist has bought land on Kenyon Street next to the 20th Street Methodist to build a church. Price paid for the plot is twelve thousand dollars. Jones left the former church with followers after board disagreements. AND Marion Ohio August 19 Post office reports daily orders for Harding memorial stamps from five to one hundred dollars. A surplus of six hundred thousand of the latest issue arrived from Washington indicating expected use after the monument is dedicated.
The Board of Health reports Cascade Park spring contains sewage and is unfit for drinking. City Chemist detected contamination about two weeks ago and warning signs were posted, but the sign was later destroyed leaving the spring accessible. Officials urge the public not to use the water for beverage purposes.
