Don E. Rotsinger, Erie County elections director and Sandusky delegate, says Republicans expect a smaller older better educated and more orderly convention than the Democratic one held last month. He praises Nixon and bets McGovern will win few states.
Elyria Mayor Leonard Reichlin says Lorain may be forced to abandon its landfill if a county wide alternative is developed and that a county solid waste district could end competition. He favors a studied approach and recycling, noting Oberlin’s Mt Trashmore idea and bids pressuring for a county contract.
U S Postal Service rolls out star marked mailboxes in Elyria to speed delivery. One star boxes collect at 5 pm with Sundays and holidays pickup. Two star boxes advertise 8 pm next day deadlines but actual Elyria cutoff is 7 30 pm for next day service. Letters after 7 30 pm go out at 2 am for delivery in two days. Airmail to major cities should be next day, others two days.
A warm and cold air clash near Lorain County produced a thunderstorm that dumped 2.20 inches of rain in August, breaking the prior 2.05 inch record. The storm caused widespread telephone outages, flooded basements, and sewers while power crews worked to restore service.
The National Weather Service reported a possible tornado near Gibsonburg between Fremont and Toledo. A severe thunderstorm warning covered Ottawa Sandusky Erie and southeastern Seneca counties as storms moved east southeast from Toledo toward Sandusky. Power and communications outages hindered reports of damage and station operations.

A lone thief escaped from the Central Security National Bank at 1443 Colorado Ave in Lorain after entering the bank shortly before 10. He fled north on Lehigh Avenue and a police and FBI search is underway in nearby woods. The earlier Central Security robbery yielded about 96009.
