Kissinger flies to Saigon amid peace talks hints

Dr. Henry Kissinger arrived in Saigon on a two day mission amid speculation of a breakthrough in Paris talks. North Vietnam’s Le Duc Tho remained in Hanoi claiming the trip routine. Kissinger met U S Ambassador Bunker and General Weyand as Saigon officials weighed Thieu’s fate and the possible formation of an interim coalition regime.

Butz predicts fall in beef prices by November

In Columbus the Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz forecast a $2 per hundredweight drop in beef prices by November. Jack Davis of the Ohio Packing Co. notes recent $2 per hundredweight fall and outlines expected reductions through the meat market, with housewives seeing lower prices at the grocery.

Elyria Savings and Trust Co withdraws from state loan program

Gov. John J. Gilligan questions why Elyria's largest bank quit the Ohio Student Loan program and asks R. J. Fitch to outline the bank's reasons. Fitch and two directors declined comment while EST officials say they have not offered loans for seven to eight years, and no local banks currently issue such loans. Ohio Student Loan Commission chair J. Ronald Castell calls the move disappointing and notes the bank's withdrawal occurred August 1.

McGovern Gains UAW Backing in Ohio Campaign Swing

Sen George McGovern won an endorsement from United Auto Workers who pledged support as he promised a full employment economy. He projected carrying 80 to 90 percent of labor votes in Ohio and other states. He urged ending industrial accidents and pledged to remove economic controls within days of taking office while stressing jobs and inflation as central issues.
