Auto slump drags down June industrial output

UPI reports the U.S. industrial production fell 0.1 percent in June as auto output dropped over 3 percent, offsetting gains elsewhere. The overall index stood at 152.1 in July, about 50 percent above 1967, marking a second straight decline. Consumer durables fell 2.6 percent led by autos, while non durables slid 0.3 percent.

Naples mother bears eight babies in medical record bid

In Naples Italy hospital officials reported a woman gave birth to eight babies three boys and five girls the most live births in medical history. The mother Mrs Pasqualina Chiasnese is in good condition and the octuplets were moved to Naples area hospitals for intensive care. Previously a six child birth ended in all infants dying. Guinness had recorded six as the prior high.

Lorain jury clears suspects in Moore kidnapping case

The Lorain County Grand Jury did not indict Vernal Lloyd and Henry Carpenter in the April 22 kidnapping and rape of Kathy Moore. Prosecutor Frank Horvath said the no-bill came because Moore was in psychiatric care and could not testify, with charges potentially revived later.

Old P.S. 9 to be sold for museum plans in Elyria

City officials propose selling the Old District Nine Schoolhouse, Lorain County's last one room school, to the Lorain County Historic Society for 1. The society aims to renovate it into an early-education museum open to the public with minimal admission, potentially funded by federal grants. a 20 year sale includes two adjacent lots for parking and landscaping, with a future city decision on ownership at term end.

Record cold hits area with 99 year low at airport

A Wednesday low of 45 at Cleveland Hopkins Airport broke a 99 year record, surpassing the 1880 48 degree mark. Local observer Ray Diederich logged 46 degrees in North Ridgeville, beating the 1950 record of 50. Diederich expects a warming trend today as Elyria tops 69 for the day and a 48 degree overnight low was recorded.
