Ernest Lehi, a Wichita retiree, pursues funding for an airtrain rail guided aircraft that would run 38 feet above ground and reach 300 mph. He and Wichita State University aerospace professor Glen Zumwalt say DOT has twice rejected study funding since 1975, citing policy limits on intercity ground transport research. Estimated cost $2 million per mile for rights of way and construction, making government scale necessary.
Lehl and Zumwalt described an airtrain at a international conference, a 80 foot long craft carrying 80 passengers, guided by a double-rail beam with electric wheel guidance at low speeds and jet propulsion for speeds above 80 mph. They seek DOT funding for wind tunnel tests and a 5 foot model, arguing it could be faster and cheaper than cars or planes for intercity trips under 500 miles. They face funding and test hurdles but press on with designs and risk assessments.
