Lorain rejects county wide landfill plan due to cost

Lorain will not join the county solid waste plan as proposed costs would be four to five times higher than current spending. Mayor Zahorec notes disposal at $5.60 per ton ignores city collection costs and long-haul expenses. The existing landfill earns about $210000 yearly from outside haulers, and a county program would end that revenue. The city also plans to extend the landfill lease beyond two years. US Steel official Cobozzi states, We can't subsidize another program.
