New Deal To Control Young Democrats
Pittsburgh August 11 delegates at the National Convention of the Young Democrats moved toward endorsing New Deal policies. President Roosevelt warned the party to nominate a liberal candidate in 1940 or withdraw support. Senator Claude Pepper assailed Wall Street kingmakers who favor Bricker for president and Dewey for vice president. Pepper faulted Bricker’s Ohio record and urged liberal Democratic unity ahead of speeches by Barkley and McNutt. The president’s message framed the debate as a clash between liberal and conservative factions within the party.
