Navy divers and salvage crews lifted the sunken submarine Squalus off the ocean floor near Portsmouth New Hampshire towing it 76 feet up and 164 feet down to a temporary resting place off the Isles of Shoals. The 5 million dollar sub was towed stern first at one mile per hour aboard the Falcon mother ship with 26 dead aboard and 33 survivors rescued by diving bell after its May sinking.

Society Man Shoots Woman Then Kills Himself in Smithtown
In Smithtown New York August 12 a society man Lawrence Sprague twenty shot his fiancée Mrs Elizabeth Greve Caldwell Carolin thirty one then shot himself after wounding state trooper John Busch. The tragedy occurred at the home of Mrs Tracy Higgins estranged wife of the Higgins Ink head. Carolin was hospitalized with two bullets in her abdomen and not expected to live. Sprague wounded Trooper Busch in the arm before turning the gun on himself. Carolin and Sprague had been active in Long Island society circles and were said to have had a quarrel over marriage plans. Mrs Higgins reported a drunken man at her home early morning. The story continues on page 2.

One Year Old Child Dies In Accident At Home
Colleen Urias, one year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Leon Urias of Stop 7 Yellow Line, died after a gasoline spill incident in her kitchen. She crawled to a pint can of gasoline on the floor and collapsed beside a kiddie car. She died about an hour after being taken to Ely Yia Memorial hospital. The funeral is set for Tuesday at 2 pm with Rey ST Paul officiating at the Vincent Methodist Episcopal church.
