UPI reports broad gains across the Dow NYSE and S and P indices this week as investors flood the market. The Dow rises to 954.69, the NYSE index hits 70.81, and the S and P climbs to 123.61 amid heavy volume and optimism that the recession has bottomed.
Avon New students are invited to attend orientation at Avon High School in the cafeteria from 9 30 to 11 a m on August 22. They will meet Principal David Clark Assistant Principal Rosemary Jenkins librarian student council president and cheerleaders. Council members assist in finding rooms and lockers and guiding attendance.
Thunderstorms spawned by Hurricane Allen raked southern Texas with a tornado spinning through Brownsville and flooding in several areas. Gale winds lashed Brownsville after daybreak as a tornado destroyed five homes and a bakery. Other storms spread rain from Virginia to Minnesota and the northern Plains.
National Hurricane warnings are in effect today for the western Gulf Coastal Region and the southern Plains Region. Rain or showers are expected over portions of the upper Mississippi Valley, the upper Great Lakes, the northeastern states and Florida. Elsewhere, weather is expected to be fair with skies ranging from clear to partly cloudy.
Considerable cloudiness brings scattered showers and thunderstorms through Monday. Lows tonight in the mid to upper 60s with highs today and Monday in the 80s to 85. Rain chances are about 60 percent today and 50 percent tonight.
