UAW weighs Chrysler crisis in emergency session
CHICAGO UAW members were called into emergency session to consider Chrysler Corp s financial crisis and a two year wage and benefit freeze. More than 200 officers at Chrysler plants in the U S and Canada were expected to attend as UAW President Douglas Fraser warned of a dim view of the demand though sacrifices to help Chrysler regain health could be possible. State and federal officials weighed loan guarantees and possible relief from emission and fuel economy standards while Michigan leaders sought Washington aid. Chrysler s losses totaled 260 million in the first six months, with a 207 million second quarter loss prompting Lee Iacocca to bargain with the UAW for new labor deals for about 100 000 workers.
