FBI Agent Slain in Cleveland While Apprehending Fugitive

FBI agent John Oliver was killed on Cleveland's East Side during a pursuit of a kidnap and armed robbery suspect tied to Chicago. A task force including FBI and SWAT moved to capture the alleged killer Melvin Guyon, whose mother resides on the East Side.

Inflation soars as July wholesale prices rise 1.1 percent

Labor Department reports July wholesale prices up 1.1 percent led by energy costs gas and heating oil surged with gasoline 3.9 percent and heating oil 9 percent gasoline prices 38.9 percent above July 1978. Excluding food, wholesale prices rose 1.4 percent with intermediate goods up 1.9 percent the largest jump in nearly five years.

Elyria settles second civil suit over killings by officer

Elyria lawyers reached an out of court settlement in the city's second civil damage suit tied to the fatal shootings of two burglary suspects by Officer Kilie. Dollie Morrison widow of Michael Morrison 22 filed a $4 million suit, alleging civil rights violations and wrongful death. The case stemmed from Morrison's Dec 4 1978 death at Kaplan's Furniture Store. The judge dismissed the wrongful death charge leaving a civil rights claim and reducing claimed damages to 2 million. Settlement amount undisclosed and no gag order imposed.

Gasohol arrives at three Lorain County stations

Independent Oil and Tire Co of Elyria says three Lorain County stations will begin marketing a gasohol blend Friday. The mix is 90 percent unleaded gasoline and 10 percent ethanol, offered at the same price as premium at 9 stations.
