Elyria police describe an extremely bold burglar who has entered eight occupied residences since Aug 1, mostly by removing window screens and taking only cash. The suspect, seen in several areas, enters between 10 pm and 4 am, often stealing wallets from purses and pockets while residents sleep.
An ABC News poll finds 81 percent of Americans believe Richard Nixon was guilty of Watergate wrongdoing, nearly the same as five years earlier. Sixty four percent think he should not hold major office again, echoing public sentiment since his 1974 resignation per a prior Roper poll.
In Cleveland an all out dragnet of 400 law enforcement officers targets Melvin Ray Guyon also known as Tyrone Little after FBI Special Agent Johnme L Oliver was fatally shot during an arrest at a public housing project. Guyon, on FBI most wanted list, fled as Oleander Tenwick returned fire. Oliver and others faced a deadly day of violence as investigators probe motives.
The FBI reported James Maloney faced no confirmed ties to the Weather Underground after an early 1970s inquiry, with peers describing him as political yet quiet. Investigators weighed motives from political bitterness to low mood after a sparse going away party, as Roger Young voiced not knowing why.

Ford Motor announces two week layoffs totaling 3800 workers at the Avon Ohio Truck Plant and Lorain Assembly Plant to cut truck inventories. About 1500 at Avon and 2900 at Lorain will be idled with workers to return by August 27. Dealers hold a near 100 day supply. ideal is 80 to 76 days. Six other Ford truck plants will shut next week for vacation and model year changeover.
