Whale skull find reshapes view of ancient Basilosaurus
Archaeologists from Louisiana State University and the Army Corps of Engineers unearthed a 4 foot Basilosaurus skull with an intact spine from the Red River at Montgomery Landing. The one in a billion fossil, dating to about 45 million years ago, suggests deeper water death and provides rare insight into early whale evolution. The team, paid $157,000 by the Corps for a yearlong study, plans to assemble the remains for LSU’s Museum of Geoscience.
