Obelin College library faces massive restoration and funding gaps
Oberlin College libraries hold more than half their volumes from before 1930 and by 2000 three quarters may be unrestorable or unused. From Oberlin to Obirin the Japanese connection
Oberlin College and Obirin Gakuen in Japan share a historic link. Obirin, founded by Dr. Yasuzo Shimizu in 1926, means a beautiful grove of cherry trees and sits 30 miles southeast of Tokyo. A group of 33 Obirin students, guided by Kazuo Ohno, visited Oberlin as part of an English study and cultural exchange housed at Asia House on campus. Shimizu, now 90 and still president, helped establish the private institute linked to the Japan ecumenical union of Christianity.

Stampede of job seekers hits Wellington plant ad
Amville Attachments Co. plant manager Larry Stuart attracted about 300 applicants for 10 new jobs at the Wellington facility after a Sunday Chronicle-Telegram ad. The firm, maker of scoops for earth moving equipment, will add a second shift and 10 workers under a new government contract, with potential for more hires if demand remains strong. Applicants came from Lorain, North Ridgeville, Elyria, Grafton, Norwalk and Wellington, many facing mortgages and layoffs.
