Elyria Parents push for city curfew with petition drive

A dozen parents and five councilmen met at a backyard summit to discuss a curfew for Elyria youths. They circulated petitions asking council for a curfew law and noted the need for tax support to fund police enforcement. council members said public safety funds and more officers are required to enforce such a rule.

Storm cripples power and capsizes boats on Lake Erie

A severe mid afternoon thunderstorm with 55 to 60 mph winds knocked out power to about 10,000 customers in CETI's area and left 2,000 in Elyria and nearby towns without electricity. The storm capsized dozens of boats on Lake Erie and Coast Guard crews rescued 23 boaters. no drownings were reported.

Foley dominates Elyria Distance Classic in minute lead

Mike Foley, 24, of Lakewood, coached Rocky River High cross country, wins the Elyria Distance Classic 6.2 miles at Lorain County Community College in 31 minutes 50 seconds. Fritz Rehlen of Rocky River finishes second in 33 23, with John Murphy of Elyria Catholic close behind at 33 50.

Profile of the winner EC student is top Female finisher

The report details finishers in a cross country style race with Liz Vajentic 16 as the top female at 42 15 and 96th overall. It notes 542 registrations, 515 official participants with 502 finishers. Tim Kuhman and Elyria Catholic graduate are among top five. Marc Pogachar, last year's winner, finished 17th after a late season start. Prizes awarded by age and sex, with multiple women’s and men’s age group winners listed.

Not just summer soldiers rally against nuclear energy near plant

About 500 demonstrators gathered near the Davia Besse nuclear power station as storms rolled through Crane Creek State Park. Speakers included Dr John W Gofman and Cleveland Mayor Dennis Kucinich. Gofman cited studies on low level radiation, claiming effects are far worse than once thought and funding was cut. He said he will publish a workers study this fall.
