Line denies SAS bid to fly POWs to New York

A Stockholm newspaper claimed SAS was asked to fly 183 American war prisoners from Indochina to New York, but SAS issued a formal denial. The airline said a private party approached it about a charter from Vientiane to Rome for 187 passengers, with no identification tying them to military personnel. U.S. and Swedish officials denied knowledge of any POW exchange, while Harlan Chapman expressed cautious hope for the prisoners’ release. Subsequent statements clarified no government involvement and noted the matter was tied to Vietnam withdrawal timetables.
