The PBS biography traces Billie Holiday from her dissonant life to her artful singing. Friends recount how heroin and cocaine fueled her addiction, with husbands and lovers feeding her compulsions as she battled fame and decline.
Baltimore born 1915, Billie Holiday, known as Lady Day, faced abuse from childhood. At ten she endured rape by a 40-year-old man and, as a teen, turned to prostitution before finding work as a dancer and singer in Harlem. Jazz producer John Hammond later recommended her to Benny Goodman, leading to her first 1933 recording with a band led by a renowned clarinetist.
The account recalls Holiday leaving Count Basie’s band after a Southern tour where she faced demeaning dress and Basie’s group treated as field hands. Sylvia Syms recounts how Lady Day began wearing garde nias as a hair trademark after a curling iron accident, then notes that drug use followed her marriage.
The piece recalls Billie Holiday’s 1940s heroin use and a 1946 film debut in New Orleans. A Philadelphia hotel bust and a federal prison sentence stalled her rise, barred New York cabaret licenses, and left her voice fading by 1959 during an indictment for heroin in her bed. The show’s closing funeral scene, with her singing I’ll Be Seeing You, remains poignantly haunting.
