Two Reports Link Costs, Labor Strains Across Nation
General Motors reports a 1937 second quarter loss of 22 million dollars blamed on widespread strikes and higher costs. A survey of 83 major cities shows middle class families canceling home-building plans as material and labor costs raise the typical 4000 dollar house by about 15 percent. Both stories highlight irony as wage gains are eroded by rising prices, challenging the American standard of living backed by mass production and deferred payments.
