Oberlin girl escapes bomb blast in Madrid

Catharine Sherman an 18 year old Oberlin student survived a Basque bombing in Madrid while in a train station writing a card before departing for Portugal. She described the blast debris dust and mass panic as she ran outside salvaged belongings and then grabbed a cab to the airport and flew to Paris skipping the Portugal leg to avoid returning via Spain.

County shifts funds to keep sheriff operations running

Lorain County faces a strained sheriff salary fund as of June 30 with 51 574 left of 60 400 monthly payroll. County Administrator Dellisanti and Auditor Pijor will transfer funds Friday to cover remaining year needs and reevaluate income estimates while a 2 mill levy to fund sheriff operations is to appear on the November ballot for five years about 3 2 million yearly to cover rural patrols jail expansion and deputy pay and benefits alignment.

Biz Grove and his orchestra bring the big band sound to Ely Square from 8 to 10 p.m. The Elyria Merchants Association and Local 146 of the American Federation of Musicians present the free event. A repeat performance is set for August 23.

Rainy storm floods Broad Street in brief deluge

A pedestrian fled for shelter as storms drenched the area causing Broad Street to flood into a shallow lake. The National Weather Service observer reported 1.52 inches of rain on Wednesday and Thursday morning with little damage despite the thunder and lightning.
