Moon explorers find a scientific bonanza on Apennine frontier
Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin rode a six hour 14 minute five mile lunar buggy trek in the Apennine Mountains gathering rocks and soil, erecting a $26 million surface station near the Falcon lander. Oxygen use ran higher than expected prompting mission planners to consider shortening upcoming excursions while scientists hailed near complete achievement. Scott and Irwin, after a beefsteak dinner, prepared for a longer near 10 mile drive along Mount Hadley Delta as their second expedition began at 6:44 a.m. EDT.
