Lifeguards of Elyria Pools Guard Small World of Big Responsibility

The Elyria city pools employ thirty five lifeguards and thirteen backups who serve as babysitters referees janitors and maintenance staff as well as safety guardians. They must pass YMCA and Red Cross lifesaving courses and then compete in a city test. Lifeguards rotate every 30 minutes with breaks and work about 40 hours weekly.

Lorain woman dies in Pennsylvania Turnpike crash

A Lorain woman Anita Kibbe, 17, died from head injuries when the car she rode in struck a construction vehicle on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Allegheny Valley. Husband David Kibbe, 20, was injured with fractured ribs. Their infant daughter Tina and sister Nancy Akers, 12, were also hospitalized with injuries. Truck driver Robert Dagaro, 40, suffered minor injuries. David Kibbe, stationed at Camp LeJeune, was returning home with family.

Ex-Columbia resident killed in plane crash

A former Columbia Station resident Ernest E. Dietrich 25 and Lynn D. Gunn 28 died when their Cessna 172 crashed near Bass Lake California after attempting to land. Passengers included David A. Welham retired Navy man of Mountain View California. Dietrich a Navy petty officer and Columbia High School alumnus is survived by wife and three children, with funeral plans to Valley City.

Lorain plant stays closed as 24 hour strike extension urged

The United Steelworkers delayed the midnight strike deadline by 24 hours amid optimism for a near contract with nine major firms. Lorain Cuyahoga Works remained shut and workers were told not to report unless notified. Union leaders cited possible progress while detailing wage and cost of living protection demands.

Moon explorers find a scientific bonanza on Apennine frontier

Apollo 15 astronauts David Scott and James Irwin rode a six hour 14 minute five mile lunar buggy trek in the Apennine Mountains gathering rocks and soil, erecting a $26 million surface station near the Falcon lander. Oxygen use ran higher than expected prompting mission planners to consider shortening upcoming excursions while scientists hailed near complete achievement. Scott and Irwin, after a beefsteak dinner, prepared for a longer near 10 mile drive along Mount Hadley Delta as their second expedition began at 6:44 a.m. EDT.

Decision due Thursday on Lima State Hospital probe

Ohio Attorney General William J. Brown says a final report on alleged patient mistreatment at Lima State Hospital will be presented Thursday to Governor John J. Gilligan. A possible special grand jury could be ordered for Lima, with the governor deciding that day. Brown notes other inquiries include Ohio University officials’ business dealings and mentions Curci led a team of eight investigators.
