Steel strike nears shutdown as rail walkout widens

The 16 day steel and rail strikes threaten $50 billion in lost goods and earnings and likely shutdowns of steel mills within hours. Round the clock talks continue at the Labor Department for rails and at the Shoreham Motel for steel as UPI reports widespread disruption and halted production.

Lorain plant to wind down ahead of possible USW strike

Lorain-Cuyahoga Works will begin partial shutdown this afternoon as U S Steel weighs a four hour furnace extension if no settlement by 7 p.m. with the United Steelworkers. If no deal, heat will shift to basic oxygen furnaces and about 500 newer hires may be laid off. nationwide, 53,000 Ohio mill workers could idle.

S. Viets Take Over Two U.S. Air Control Centers

The U S Air Force handed over Bien Hoa and Pleiku air control centers to South Vietnam giving them control of air strikes in the Central Highlands and Saigon area. Laotian forces recaptured Ban Nhik as part of a push to retake Pak Song near Pakse occupied by North Vietnam since May.
