Elyria murder suspect faces Oklahoma linked trial

Marvin Gibson 21 of Youngstown Ohio faces murder by vehicle charges in Stillwater Oklahoma for the death of Deputy Jerry Beal 26 and Chief C O Rowden 60 after a high speed chase from Cushing. Gibson also faces armed robbery and house burglary counts in Oklahoma and Ohio related to a June 29 Elyria holdup that triggered the fatal crash.

Strike closes Luxaire plant in Sugar Ridge area

United Steel Workers Local 6985 began a strike at Luxaire Inc at midnight after contract talks failed. Over 300 production workers are affected as 186 to 50 rejected a two year deal with a 4 cent wage rise. Federal mediator John Mesereau met with both sides. no further talks set.

Ath St. bridge widening contract awarded in Elyria

The Fourth Street bridge over Black River in Elyria is awarded to Associated Builders Supply Co. of Lorain for 175 527. Construction will widen from two to four lanes and start immediately with completion in about seven months. Traffic will be halted for four months while pedestrians may cross. Mayor Reichlin signed the contract. A $170 000 note issue was authorized, with $5 442 remaining from the 1958 bridge levy to help finance the work. Safety Director James Tracey explained plans and scheduling.

Steelmakers push price hikes despite Johnson criticism

U S Steel Bethlehem Republic raised prices amid strong union contract gains. Bethlehem and Republic posted 4.5 percent hikes effective August 8, while U S Steel announced selective increases on tin mill products with October 1 effect. Johnson urged restraint and warned against price hikes.

Unions sue over auto insurance rate fix in Ohio

The AFL-CIO filed a federal antitrust suit against 129 auto insurers over a July rate increase aimed at raising premiums by about 13 to 5 percent and costing Ohio motorists up to 25 dollars annually. The suit seeks a court order blocking further rate hikes and declares the industry unregulated by state action.

Medina Rams Threaten Crowd at Medina County Far

A crowd of 9,037 attends the Medina County Far while reports say Vietnam faces a record 541,000 amid guerrilla attacks around Saigon. Yesterday’s firefights killed 11 South Vietnamese troops and seven Communists with 31 government soldiers dead and 85 wounded.

Lorain worker crushed between pusher and ore car

In Lorain early today a 41 year old man was crushed between a pusher and an ore car at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad ore docks. The death marked the city's second fatal industrial accident in four days. Police said the pusher moved slowly and trapped the man as he stepped from between cars. a hydraulic jack freed the body after thetragedy.
