Derailed Penn Central Freight Cars Shock Grafton

An overheated journal caused 28 eastbound Penn Central freight cars to derail on the Big Four line in Grafton at 5 37 am. No injuries. Main Street crossing blocked about four hours with 450 feet of track torn up and repairs expected in 24 hours. Trains rerouted via Crestline. B and O freight delayed.

Elyria death suspect held after fatal crash and arrests

Marvin Gibson 20 of Youngstown is held after a June 29 chase that killed Payne County deputy Jerry Beall and Cushing chief QO Rowden in Oklahoma. Gibson faces armed robbery charges in Elyria and is under guard at a Oklahoma City hospital. Wallace Brown, 19, also Youngstown, is jailed on armed robbery and auto theft.

Voters Reject Renewal Plan in North Ridgeville

North Ridgeville residents voted about three to one against a proposed urban renewal program in a special election. Total 104 opposed, 328 for. turnout about 39 percent of 3 585 registered voters. Ward two had the highest turnout with 467 ballots, 248 against. Mayor Noll blamed apathy and disinterest and ordered house to house inspections to report housing code violations.

U S Ambassador W Averell Harriman charged North Vietnam with ruling through terror and urged Beijing to grant its people freedom.
