Wedding guests die in high speed car crash

Two guests died when a 1965 Cobra crashed after a wedding reception on East River Road near Chestnut Ridge. James Cornell 23 of Cleveland and Ronald Lasko 20 of Mentor died after Cornell allegedly sped to the curve, spun out of control, and struck two trees. Cornell recently graduated from Case Western Reserve University and worked for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. Lasko was a Cleveland State University student and fraternity brother attended the wedding.

Holiday traffic deaths rise. Michigan leads with 22

UPI reports holiday travel surged past 1967 Labor Day rates and nearly matched 1966 records. Michigan tallied 22 traffic deaths, California 24, Wisconsin 20, with New York 18, Ohio 17, Texas 17, Pennsylvania 17. Safety Council warned 575 to 675 fatalities expected in 73 hours. Two crashes near Grand Canyon National Park left three dead and five injured. two brothers and their wives died in a dirt-road collision near Pleasantville.

Czechoslovak Communist leadership shakeup announced

The Central Committee expanded the Presidium from 11 to 21 members amid a push for censorship and tougher security to speed the withdrawal of Soviet forces. Alexander Dubcek led a new bloc of liberal allies with conservatives and neutrals, while Ludvik Svoboda was removed from the presidency. Vasil Bilak was named and billed as a hardliner and rival. Three alternate members, all hardliners, were also chosen. The committee postponed a scheduled decision indefinitely.

Berea killings split as 13 charged after gun battle

Police say a gun duel at a National States Rights Party meeting left two dead and several injured in Berea Kentucky. Three cars of Negroes fired on about 20 whites, sparking a chase and about 50 shots. Seven white men are charged with Boggs death and six Negroes with Rucker’s death.
