Uniform Freight Rates Ordered Across Nation by ICC

The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered uniform class rates on classified freight in all states east of the Rockies to end regional differentials. Shippers in southern and western states could see up to a 15 percent rate cut, aligning with eastern regions, while eastern rates remain largely unchanged. West of the Rockies remain under ICC review before final action. Railroads must submit a uniform classification within four months, after which the commission will abolish regional differentials east of the Rockies. The 1945 ruling had deemed regional rates unjustly discriminatory, but current actions do not affect a planned 15 percent rail rate boost sought by railroads for wage and supply costs. The note ends before addressing bulk commodities.
