Bill to Help Korean War Veterans Introduced in Senate
Washington sponsors of a new bill to aid Korean War veterans said it would fix many problems of the old GI bill. Sens Walter F. George and Robert S. Kerr introduced the measure to match World War II benefits with simpler administration and safeguards against excess public funds. The bill provides up to four years of training for veterans who served after June 27 1950, with start within two years of discharge and finish within seven years. Subistence payments would range from 70 to 95 dollars monthly for on the job training and 80 to 125 dollars for full time schooling. Each veteran gains one school term or more per month of service.

Showdown May Come Tomorrow in Korea Armistice Talks
United Nations and Communist negotiators at Kaesong remained firm on their buffer zone proposals as cease fire talks stall. The UN favors a buffer along the current battle line, shortening the 8th Army’s defensive front, while Communists push for a line near the 38th parallel threatening a larger retreat and loss of territory if talks collapse. The session ended with awkward quiet as delegates recessed until page 2.

UN delegates reject buffer zone demand at 38th parallel
UN negotiators at Kaesong bluntly refused to back any armistice buffer zone along the 38th parallel, leaving the fate of truce talks or a full war resume to the Communists. The 17th session extended deadlock seven days as Nam and Joy sparred while Dean Acheson backed the UN stance as militarily indefensible.
